SOHO SPOTLIGHTS: BAKERIES

There's no shortage of good bakeries in London right now, but Soho has quietly become one of the best places to spend a slow morning moving between coffee counters, pastry shelves and warm bread straight from the oven. From old-school patisserie institutions to newer spots drawing queues onto the pavement, these are the places we keep going back to.

Jolene

LOCATION: 13 Bridle Lane, London W1F 9BT

DISTANCE FROM BROADWICK SOHO: 2 minute walk

Jolene's Soho outpost has quietly opened inside Aries just around the corner from us on Broadwick Street. Expect beautifully made pastries, warm breads and excellent coffee served from a space that feels more like a hidden Soho café than a bakery counter. There's usually a mix of fashion regulars, locals and people stopping in after wandering through Soho, which suits the atmosphere perfectly. Ideal for a slow morning coffee or picking up something sweet on the way back through the neighbourhood.

MAISON BERTAUX

LOCATION: 28 Greek Street, W1D 5DQ

DISTANCE FROM BROADWICK SOHO: 4 minute walk

A Soho institution that's been here since 1871. Maison Bertaux still feels wonderfully old Soho, with handwritten signs, crowded cake counters and tables tucked upstairs above Greek Street. It's part patisserie, part café, part time capsule, and one of those places everyone should visit at least once.

PANADERA

LOCATION: 3 Hopkins St, London W1F 0HS

DISTANCE FROM BROADWICK SOHO: 2 minutes walk

Panadera has quickly become one of Soho's most talked about bakery stops. Known for its Filipino-inspired pastries and beautifully laminated bakes, it's the kind of place where the shelves empty quickly by lunchtime. Small, always busy and genuinely worth the queue.

IT'S BAGELS

LOCATION: 8 D'Arblay Street, W1F 8DP

DISTANCE FROM BROADWICK SOHO: 3 minute walk

Tucked just behind Wardour Street, It's Bagels has quickly become one of Soho's busiest breakfast and lunch spots. Inspired by classic New York bagel shops, expect soft, chewy bagels filled generously with smoked salmon, pastrami, cream cheese and all the right extras. There's usually a queue stretching outside onto D'Arblay Street, but it moves quickly, and the atmosphere feels very Soho: fast-paced, slightly chaotic and always worth it once you've got a warm bagel in hand.
